A hamster's lifespan is 2 - 3 years (some a bit longer).
Hamsters are solitary animals.
You will need to move slowly when working with your hamster. They are skittish and have
poor eyesite. They may bite you if you surprise them.
They are extremely quick and they will jump from very high places because they don't have any concept of height.
Hamsters are nocturnal so think carefully before placing their cages. I can remember many nights that the little guys woke me up by running in their exercise wheel.
Your hamsters cage will need to be kept clean and dry at all times so you will have to be willing to clean the cage thoroughly twice a week.
Young children must be supervised around them at all times.
When choosing a hamster, keep in mind that the females tend to get cranky with age.
If you choose a female hamster, make sure she was kept with only females at the pet store.
If not, you might have a litter of babies very shortly.
If you are still interested in getting a hamster, please visit your local library and read up on this wonderful species. Both of you will be much happier because you did.

If you notice that your hamsters tail is wet and there is diarreah or lots of fecal matter around your hamsters tail, take it to a vet immediately or get an antibiotic called "dry tail" at Petsmart or your local pet shop! If left untreated for 1,2 or 3 days, your hamster can die! So check often and clean your hamsters cage out frequently.
When hamsters chew on the bars of it's cage it doesn't mean it wants to escape. All it means is that it's shortening it's teeth.
Hamsters can get cancer and tumors. If you notice your hamster is losing weight, losing hair, has lumps, take it to vet right away! Even if they cannot help it and you have to put it to sleep, it's better than letting her suffer.
If you notice that your hamster has wet tail, immediately get it away from your other rodent pets. this disease spreads, and fast. i have had three hammys die because i left a sick hamster in a room with 2 others.
I had a hampster make his bed under the water bottle. unfortunately, the bottle leaked and his bedding became wet within a few short days, he died.
Like previously stated, hamsters can get cancer and tumors really easy. Please, take them to the vet. You may think that hamsters don't cost as much as doctor's visit, but beleive me, you'll be glad when you take them to a vet. I have had 4 hamsters and 2 out of the 4 have had tumors, one of them didn't make it and did indeed die from the tumor, because I was slow. PLease, please, don't make my mistake.
You shouldn't give hamsters ANY piece of an orange!(It gives them the runs big time!)
I have had 27 golden hamsters at one time and I'll let you know that I found them to be a very lovable and holdable hamster. It is always best to wake them up by gently calling their name and giving a treat or peice of food when woken up before handling or they will bite/nip. They might not know its you and think you're a predator. I also found most dwarf hamsters to be nippy.
You should not worry if you don't have something for your hamster to chew on or to sharpen it's teeth, just do what i do to my critter: buy a plastic wheel or cage. They love it! Mine ate a whole centimeter!
