A guinea pig's lifespan is 4 - 7 years.
They sleep for short periods throughout the day.
They are very messy so cage cleaning can be as often as twice a day.
To bathe your cavie: 1. Bath guinea pigs on a warm day or in a warm room, free from drafts ,
2. Keep their heads dry, 3. Use a mild baby shampoo, 4. Use warm water - only a few inches,
5. Rinse well, 6. Towel dry thoroughly, 7. Use a hair dryer on low to finish drying your pet, not directly on pet
When excited, scared or during playtime, they squeal quite loudly so the bedroom is probably not the best place for their cage.
Guinea pigs should always have a good daily supply of grass or hay. They
also need to have guinea pig mix, mash or guinea pig pellets. But if they do not
eat something in the mix, don't leave it out of their next feed because it is not
kind to allow them to develop lazy eating habits. You need to feed them plenty of
fresh fruit and vegetables in order to supply their vitamin C.
They are fairly delicate, so must be handled gently to avoid injuries.
Young children must be supervised around them at all times.
It will take your new guinea pig between 2 and 4 weeks to become accustomed to your home.
If you are still interested in getting a guinea pig, please visit your local library and read up on this wonderful species. Both of you will be much happier because you did.

Guinea pigs can be potty trained so they will go in the same spot in their cage. Even in a bowl as long as there is bedding in it.
Guinea pigs are social animals. If you cannot spend adequate time with them, it is best to get them a companion or they will be lonely. I have two gunea pigs and they are adorable and funny when they play together or groom each other. I think one also "potty trained" the other! And they still love spending time with me...snuggling in a towel on my lap or my shoulder.
Our cavies also enjoy the rabbits we have. We let each bunny out (individually) twice daily, and let the two cavies out with our Siamese bunny, Nutmeg. Nutmeg likes to play with both cavies, and they chase him as well!
You should never wear any costly clothes when you handle a guinea pig because they love to chew on them!
Guinea pigs can use an exercise ball just like hamsters and gerbils. (Not exercise wheels, there is too much risk of injury) ALthough some guinea pigs will not use their ball, they will just sit there rocking back and forth. Most gunea pigs love to run around in an exercise ball! This is a good way to let your pet exercise without having to clean up the messes your pet makes on the floor. (You do have to clean the ball if your pet makes a mess in it)
