Chinchilla's

Are you the owner of one of these wonderful critters? If you have an interesting fact about this species or breed, please share with us and we'll add it to the applicable page.

Special thanks to DME Exotics (breeders of chinchilla's and sugar gliders) for their time and help.

Welcome to the chinchilla page. Chinchillas are becoming more and more popular as pets so I'm placing this area on Pet Parade to pass on some information about them to help you make a choice in pets.

  • A chinchillas lifespan is 10 - 15 years (some even longer).
  • They are extremely quick, agile and adept at jumping.
  • You must be careful when choosing the spot to keep your chinchilla cage. Chinchillas do not tolerate high temperatures so they must be kept in a cool part of your home and they are nocturnal so you probably won't want them in your bedroom.
  • They require plenty of exercise so they will need to be allowed out of their cages to play.
  • Young children must be supervised around them at all times.
  • Birds are natural enemies of chinchilla's, so if you have a bird, you probably won't want a chinchilla. As timid as they are, even the sound of the bird will frighten it.
  • Most chinchillas are very timid and shy. It will take a while before they get accustomed to you.
  • They come in a wide variety of colors: Standard gray, White mosaic, Silver mosaic, Ebony and white mosaic, Pink white, Beige, Beige violet, Ebony, Touch of velvet, Black velvet, Brown velvet, Light/dark pastel, Tan, Violet, Sapphire (very rare).
  • If you are still interested in owning a chinchilla, please visit your local library and read up on this wonderful species. Both of you will be much happier because you did.

  • Breeders:
    ChinCentral , Aloha, Oregon
    Chintasia, Corinth, Texas
    Twitch Chinchillas, Denton, Texas
